HOOF CARE FAQ's

Barefoot Hoof Care

Self-maintaining gravel crunching hoof. Ask me how!

QUESTION: My horse has always worn shoes. What will transitioning to barefoot require?
ANSWER: Transitioning to barefoot requires owner commitment, dedication, patience and skillful attention from a farrier/trimmer knowledgeable about barefoot trimming. It may require you to make a change in environment, turnout or diet. Hoof boots are also an option while riding during the transition. In today’s market there are many varieties and styles to choose from. In the end the result will be a happier and healthier horse if you give the healing powers of nature a chance.

QUESTION: Can I learn to trim my own horse’s feet?
ANSWER: Yes, you can. It’s about education and approach and knowing the difference between a traditional flat pasture trim and a functioning barefoot trim. The underlying philosophy of the barefoot movement is to stop doing wrong, and start to provide a balanced trim, a balanced environment and above all, respect the healing powers of nature. No trimmer or farrier can create the perfect hoof – we can only support the ultimate hoof that the horse is capable of growing.

QUESTION: I keep my horses on a small acreage. What can I do to ensure they are kept in the best possible condition?
ANSWER: There are many beneficial environmental changes that are easily incorporated into current horse keeping practices. I encourage you to do your own research into natural horse care and please feel free to contact me for any assistance; I’d be delighted to consult in any healthy horse endeavour!
